These packages focus upon Managing Behaviour/Language Communication which presents difficulties for parents of children with Severe Learning Difficulties and Autistic Spectrum Disorder. We recognise and seek to capitalise upon the importance of working with parents. Please note that the word ‘parents’ is used throughout to denote parents and carers. The word ‘tutors’. ‘Trainers’ and ‘Teachers’ all denote the individual who is running the programme.

• The authors found that many parents of pupils with these profound needs felt isolated as their children are transported to school or are educated in residential settings, they did not have the opportunity to meet other parents on a regular basis.

• The training package is to help parents understand the behavioural challenges presented by their child and their language and communication needs. Therefore the package aims to be both practical and flexible so that individual parent’s requests can be met.

Programme Objectives

• The objective of this programme is to augment the skills of the parents with children with severe and profound and multiple learning difficulties.

• It is designed to provide relevant and practical strategies to improve or develop behaviour management skills.

• We seek to help parents/carers realise they are educators in their own right and as such enhance their self-esteem.

The importance of working with parents

• Many schools recognise the importance of working together with parents and carers to provide consistent approaches to learning. Parents are welcomed into schools to share knowledge with staff so that both can work with each other towards a shared goal. Nonetheless staff may implement programmes which a parent might not fully understand.

• Parent and schools are working together, but just how successful will this programme be? If the parent understood a little bit more about why a symbol had been introduced and where it was leading, the programme could be more successful and beneficial.
