The EQUALS Guide to Literacy
Supporting access for pupils working towards Level 1 of the National Curriculum
- presented within P Levels (P1-P8)
- covers EYFS and Key Stages 1-3
- divided into the current twelve primary strategy strands
The acquisition of core skills is essential to enhance the lives of special needs children and young people; with Literacy and the component strands claiming centre stage.
This curriculum guide is written for staff working in special schools and other settings that provide for pupils with special needs who work within the P Levels.
The guide is rooted in the belief that pupils with special educational needs deserve an education of the highest standard. An Education that is tailored to meet individual special needs, ages and settings.
The authors of this guide come from a variety of schools that cater for pupils of different ages and abilities. This document offers a range of tried and tested examples of different genres and texts to teach and develop literacy skills to pupils working below Level 1 of the National Curriculum. Examples provided have been chosen following consideration for their age appropriateness.
The document builds on the framework and successes of the 'EQUALS Literacy Strategy' and incorporates the Year grading from the Primary Strategy and the Early Years Foundation Stage. Readers are encouraged to regard the 'Guide' as a 'set of recipe cards' that can be adapted, added to and bespoken when developing medium and long term plans.
